World Heritage Featured Itinerary

Description

Belize & Guatemala are home to a wealth of cultural and ecological heritage, and this trip highlights their best aspects. This trip includes visits to two World Heritage Sites: the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System and Tikal National Park. Belize's coastal and marine ecosystem contains the northern hemisphere's largest barrier reef, and offers equally impressive diving. We have also included a day-trip to the ancient Mayan pyramid of Tikal, where you can see conservation in action. In addition, you'll go caving at the Actun Halal and Chapat, and visit the world's only jaguar reserve.

Itinerary

 

Day 1- Arrival in Belize City. Today you will be met at the airport by a private driver who will take you directly to our hotel in the Cayo district. After checking in, you will have the rest of the day to check in and relax.

Day 2 - Today you will have the day to explore the Cayo district. We will arrange a guided caving tour of the archeological caves Actun Halal and Chapat. Here you'll see prehistoric petroglyphs and ancient dwellings. After your tour, return to the inn for a nice relaxing evening.

Day 3 - Today you will have an overnight visit across the nearby Guatemalan boarder to Tikal, one of the most impressive Mayan temples in the world. You will have a guided heritage tour of the temple and learn about local conservation and preservation efforts. You will stay the night in Guatemala and return to Belize the next day.

Day 4 - You will return from Tikal and check back in to the lodge. This afternoon you can take a canoeing trip through Barton Cave. While canoeing through the cave, you will see large and colorful stalactite formations, skeletal remains and other cultural artifacts left behind by the Maya centuries ago.

Day 5 - Today it will be time to head Cockscomb Basin and the only Jaguar sanctuary in the world. En route to the sanctuary, you will stop at the inland Blue Hole, where you can take a dip, or go for some world-class snorkeling and bird watching.

Day 6 - Time to travel from the mountains of the Cayo district to you beachfront bungalow at Reef's End Lodge. You will be driven to the beach and take a boat out to the island and the lodge. You will have the rest of the day to relax on the beach, or snorkel in the beach.

Days 7, 8 - You will have the next two days to explore all that the Belize Barrier Reef has to offer. You will have guided snorkeling tours of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, and the Blue Hole. You are sure to have an unforgettable experience.

Day 9- Time to head back to the states. After breakfast we will arrange for a private transfer back to Belize City, after a relaxing and rejuvenating vacation. You will arrive with plenty of time to check in for your flight. Safe travels.

Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

The coastal area of Belize is an outstanding natural system consisting of the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere, offshore atolls, several hundred sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons and estuaries.

Tikal National Park

In the heart of the jungle, surrounded by lush vegetation, lies one of the major sites of Mayan civilization, inhabited from the 6th century B.C. to the 10th century A.D. The ceremonial center contains superb temples and palaces, and public squares accessed by means of ramps. Remains of dwellings are scattered throughout the surrounding countryside.
