The sport of rock climbing has recently begun to take hold in Costa Rica. Although still very young, this sport has definitely been cultivated by a small group of locals and transients. Being a Volcanic country, Costa Rica offers quite a bit of variety in its different types of climbing, with plenty of sport climbing, ranging from 5.8 to low 5.12 here and there. Trad routes are as numerous as sport routes, and there is bouldering around almost every corner. San Jose has an indoor climbing facility (Mundo Adventura) and plenty of local crags for day trips. Overhanging faces, slabs, and ceilings can all be found within a 2-hour drive from San Jose. Chirripo National Park, located 80 or so kilometers from San Jose, offers a great overnight climbing experience for bouldering, trad, and sport fans. For some people going down is just as exciting as going up, so the option to doing some rappelling is always open. Plenty of waterfall and open rock face rappelling adventures can be found all over this tropical country.
