| National Parks, Reserves, and Wildlife Refuges |
Considered one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world, Costa Rica boasts over 40 national parks, reserves, and wildlife refuges which occupy over 25% percent of the national territory and protect jewels of the country's rich but diminishing wilderness. National parkland acquisition has been supported primarily by international conservation organization. The parks are now managed by a national park service and are supported by associated entry fees. In some areas surrounding the national parks there are private reserves, which are privately owned and have been created by local communities and/or organizations. Visitors are able to visit these reserves and stay in local lodges, where their tourism dollars then go back into helping to manage the reserve and in many cases support the local community. Many of these reserves and all the national parks offer daily guided tours. We can also arrange for a private guide if you are interested. To learn more about individual parks, reserves, or wildlife refuges and their location in the country please refer to our interactive map.
